College Ready Grant 2015-2017

Great Lakes is pleased to commit $4.2 million in grants to nine programs experienced in helping high school students boost their college readiness. They will provide two full years of extra instruction to help more than 800 students entering their junior years on the cusp of college readiness move closer to benchmarks for success in college math and English, so they are prepared to pass those crucial courses from day one.

Alverno College

Reading the World: Alverno English and Math College Success Academy

Milwaukee, Wisconsin


A group of 75 female students from Milwaukee Public Schools will spend their Friday nights at Alverno for skill-building workshops in math and English. This program is based on the college's successful Girls Advanced Academy in Science and Mathematics.

Boys & Girls Club of Dane County

College Ready Scholars 2017

Madison, Wisconsin


A cohort of 75 Verona High School students will receive 11-13 hours per week of math and English assistance, comprised of tutoring and a special course taught by qualified instructors. Academic coordinators provide one-on-one holistic support so students can work through life issues and focus on their studies.

College Now Greater Cleveland

R.I.S.E. – Raising Individual Student Expectations

Cleveland, Ohio


One hundred students from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District will benefit from a combination of services held four days a week, including ACT-prep courses focused on math and English, tutoring and independent study projects, and advising sessions on college access and financial aid.

Kent State University

College Today: A Collaborative Initiative with Kent State University and the Akron Public Schools

Akron, Ohio


Kent State instructors will provide school-day instruction in math and English to 80 students at two high schools. This new program builds on the success of other Kent State interventions: Minding the Gap, College-Bound Initiative and the Writing Ourselves Project.

Milwaukee Area Technical College

Driving Dreams

Milwaukee, Wisconsin


The goal of this program is to increase graduation rates and the path to college for 105 students at eight Milwaukee high schools. Students will go to MATC for math and English instruction and tutoring, and will earn both high school and college credits.

Saint Paul College

College Within Reach at Saint Paul College

St. Paul, Minnesota


This dual enrollment program will serve 125 students from three high schools, focusing on mathematics through virtual and in-person instruction at the college. A summer bridge component will keep the momentum going between years one and two.

Stark State College

Stark Preparing Akron Students for Success (Stark PASS)

Akron, Ohio


A replication of the successful Canton Early College High School program will benefit 80 students from Akron Public Schools who will spend 10 hours per week on math and English instruction as well as college success coaching. Services will be offered at East Canton Learning Center and Stark State.

University of Minnesota


Minneapolis, Minnesota


A program developed by Ph.D. candidates and their faculty advisor is expanding its focus beyond algebra to also include pre-calculus and math for social justice. Every Saturday during the academic year, 100 students will engage in interactive activities that will help boost their ACT scores.

University of Wisconsin-Madison

PEOPLE™ (Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence)

Madison, Wisconsin


This proven program is expanding its academic-year services from the Madison Metropolitan School District to include schools in Milwaukee and Menominee, for a total of 100 students benefitting from intensive tutoring. UW-Madison math and English faculty consulted on curriculum redesign.
